A tribute from the past

The influence of the old Fathers lives on in the memories of many of their former students. Ashim Kumar Pramanick, writing to order a copy of Father Theodore Mathieson’s ‘Letters to the Oxford Mission in India, 1946-1993’, whose existence he had just discovered, said,

“Father Mathieson gave me admission for boarding in the Oxford Mission Hostel, Vivekanada Road, Calcutta in the year 1954, when I came to study at Calcutta … During my stay in the Oxford Mission Students’ Hostel, all we boarders learnt order, discipline, uprightness and to love others as ourselves on the journey of our intended future life, which is still burning in our heart.”

Ashim now lives in Stutgart, Germany, and has two friends, one in Kolkata and one in Chicago, who were with him in the Hostel. They all, he says, still enjoy remembering the happy and character-forming time they spent in the care of the Oxford Mission 20-odd years ago.
